SPOM for Direct Entry Students
The requirement is identical whatever route you took into the course. What differs is where it lands in your timeline — and that changes how you should plan for it.

Does SPOM apply to you?
Yes. The Self-Paced Online Modules apply to every student under the New Scheme of Education and Training, effective 1 July 2023, regardless of how they entered the course.
The direct entry route lets graduates and postgraduates meeting the prescribed criteria skip the CA Foundation and register directly for CA Intermediate. It does not affect anything downstream of Intermediate — including the module requirement.
| Module | Subject | Applies to direct entry students? |
|---|---|---|
| Set A | Corporate and Economic Laws | Yes, compulsory |
| Set B | Strategic Cost and Performance Management | Yes, compulsory |
| Set C | One elective of ten | Yes, choose one |
| Set D | One paper of four | Yes, choose one |
No exemptions, and why
There is no exemption from any module on the basis of:
- A commerce degree, or any other degree.
- A postgraduate qualification.
- Another professional qualification.
- Work experience in the relevant field.
The modules exist to cover ground the core CA papers do not — corporate and economic law in depth, strategic cost management, and specialised electives ranging from international taxation to sustainability reporting. A general commerce degree does not cover this material, which is why no exemption arises from holding one.
This is worth being clear about, because direct entry students sometimes assume their degree substitutes for part of the requirement. It does not, and discovering that late costs time.
When you become eligible
The eligibility conditions are the same for everyone. Both must be satisfied:
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Academic status | Qualified the CA Intermediate examination and registered for the CA Final course |
| Learning hours | Completed the prescribed hours for that module on the LMS at lms.icai.org |
So the gate is CA Intermediate, not the route by which you reached it. Once both groups of Intermediate are cleared and you have registered for the Final, you are in the same position as anyone else.
Fitting SPOM into the direct entry timeline
Here is where the direct entry route does make a practical difference, though not a regulatory one.
Direct entry students typically begin articleship earlier in their overall journey relative to their examination milestones. That has two consequences for module planning:
You may have a longer articleship runway after Intermediate
That is an advantage. 120 learning hours spread across a longer period at one or two hours a day is far more manageable than compressing them into a few months.
But the work pressure is real from early on
Articleship in a busy practice does not leave two spare hours every evening during audit season. Plan the bulk of your hours around the quieter stretches.
Start the modules as soon as you are eligible rather than treating them as something to handle later. Clear the two twenty-hour papers, Set C and Set D, within your first few months of eligibility. Then work through Set B and Set A at one to two hours a day across the remainder of your articleship. By the time you are preparing for the Final, all four are behind you.
Leaving all four modules until the months before your first Final attempt. 120 hours cannot be compressed, portal maintenance can cost you a week, and a failed module needs a fresh booking. All applicable modules must be qualified before you become eligible to appear for the Final, so a delay here costs an entire attempt.
Where your background helps
No exemptions, but your degree may genuinely reduce the effort on particular papers.
| If your background is in | Consider looking at |
|---|---|
| Commerce or accounting | Set C Valuation or Financial Services and Capital Markets — the financial management foundation carries over |
| Economics | Set C Public Finance and Government Accounting |
| Law | Set C IBC or Arbitration; Set D Constitution of India and Art of Advocacy |
| Technology or information systems | Set D Digital Ecosystem and Controls |
| Business or management | Set D Entrepreneurship and Start-up Ecosystem |
Familiarity is useful, but the stronger argument for choosing an elective is overlap with a CA Final paper where marks actually count. International Taxation supports the Final tax papers; Valuation and Forex support Advanced Financial Management. A paper that is slightly harder but does double duty is often the better choice.
Frequently asked questions
Do direct entry students have to give SPOM?
Yes. The modules apply to all students under the New Scheme regardless of entry route.
Does my degree exempt me from any module?
No. There is no exemption based on academic background, prior qualification or work experience.
When can I start?
Once you have qualified CA Intermediate, registered for the CA Final course, and completed the learning hours for the module you want to attempt.
Can I do the modules during articleship?
Yes, and most students do. Tests run on most days and you choose the date, so they are designed to fit around articleship.
How many hours do I need?
120 in total — 40 each for Set A and Set B, 20 each for your Set C and Set D papers. The same as any other student.
Do the marks count towards my CA Final result?
No. Marks are not aggregated with the Final examination. The modules are qualifying only.
I am converting from the old scheme. Does this guide apply to me?
Transitional candidates are governed by category-specific ICAI announcements with their own cut-off dates. Check the announcement applicable to your category rather than relying on general guidance.
Eligibility conditions and transitional arrangements are set by ICAI and are revised periodically. Confirm your own position against the current announcements on the ICAI website.
