SPOM vs CA Final: How the Two Are Connected
They are not the same exam, the marks do not mix, and one is a gate to the other. Here is the relationship set out clearly.

Two different things
Under the New Scheme of Education and Training, effective 1 July 2023, a CA Final student has two separate examination requirements.
The Self-Paced Online Modules are four qualifying modules tested through the Self-Paced Module Test. You choose when to sit them, they are all multiple choice, and you need 50 percent to pass.
The CA Final examination is the professional examination proper — six papers across two groups, held in fixed examination cycles, with descriptive answers and the marks that actually determine whether you qualify as a chartered accountant.
SPOM is a prerequisite for the CA Final. It is not part of it, and it does not contribute to it.

SPOM as a gate to the Final
The modules gate your progress at two points:
Before appearing for the CA Final examination
All applicable modules must be qualified before you become eligible to sit the Final. This is the constraint most students meet first, and it is the reason leaving the modules late creates real risk.
Before applying for membership
Set A and Set B must be qualified before applying for membership. This applies even to candidates who received relaxations on Set C and Set D under transitional arrangements.
A pending module is not a small problem if your Final attempt is close. Between 120 learning hours, possible portal maintenance windows, slot availability in your city and the chance of failing an attempt, a module left to the last month can cost you the entire attempt.
Why the marks do not count
ICAI states expressly that marks secured in the Self-Paced Online Modules are not aggregated with marks obtained in the Final examination.
Two consequences follow, and they pull in opposite directions:
- Do not over-invest. Scoring 51 and scoring 95 have identical outcomes. Weeks spent perfecting a module are weeks not spent on a Final paper where marks are real. There is no rank, no merit list and no exemption arising from SPOM.
- Do not under-invest either. You still have to clear 50 percent, and a failed attempt costs money, time and possibly a Final attempt. The right target is a comfortable pass at the first attempt, then stop.
Read the study material once properly during your learning hours. Build a recall sheet of the numbers, sections and lists. Work through practice questions. That is enough for a 50 percent qualifying paper with no negative marking, and it leaves your remaining time for the Final.
Where the content overlaps
Although the marks do not carry across, the content sometimes does. This is worth exploiting.
Integrated Business Solutions
Paper 6 of the CA Final is a multidisciplinary case study paper that draws on the Self-Paced Online Module content alongside the core Final subjects. Studying the modules properly therefore has value beyond qualifying them — particularly Set B, whose strategic cost and performance management content recurs consistently in this paper.

All Set C papers cost you the same twenty hours. If one of them also strengthens a Final subject you will be examined on for real marks, that paper is worth more to you than an equally easy paper with no overlap.
How to sequence both
Since you control the SPOM timing entirely, the question is one of planning rather than of rules.
Start the modules during articleship, not after
The flexibility exists so the modules fit around articleship. Use quieter periods rather than peak audit or filing season.
Clear the twenty-hour modules first
Set C and Set D each need 20 learning hours against 40 for the mandatory modules. Two of your four qualifications can be done within a few weeks.
Then Set B, then Set A
Both need 40 hours. Set B pays back into IBS, and Set A into the Final law content, so neither is wasted time.
Aim to finish all four well before your Final attempt
Several months of buffer, not several weeks. This absorbs a failed attempt or a maintenance window without threatening your eligibility.
