How Long Does SPOM Actually Take?
120 learning hours is the floor and it cannot be compressed. Here is what the whole thing takes once you add revision, test slots and the realities of articleship.

The 120-hour floor
The prescribed learning hours are fixed and non-negotiable:
| Module | Learning hours |
|---|---|
| Set A — Corporate and Economic Laws | 40 |
| Set B — Strategic Cost and Performance Management | 40 |
| Set C — your chosen elective | 20 |
| Set D — your chosen paper | 20 |
| Total | 120 hours |
The LMS records time actually spent on the content. There is no way to complete a forty-hour module in ten hours, however well you already know the subject. Plan around the hours rather than hoping to shortcut them.
What it takes beyond the hours
The 120 hours are only part of it. A realistic estimate should include:
| Component | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Learning hours on the LMS | 120 hours, fixed |
| Revision before each test | 2–4 days per Set C/D paper; about a week per mandatory module |
| Booking and travel to centre | Half a day per test |
| Gap between finishing hours and an available slot | Usually days, occasionally longer |
| Buffer for a failed attempt | 2–3 weeks if it happens |
If you read the study material during your learning hours, revision is short. If you idled on the platform to run the clock down, you are effectively starting the reading from scratch afterwards — and the time comes out of your own pocket rather than the prescribed hours.
Three worked timelines
Fast: about 6 weeks
| Week | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Set D paper — 20 hours at 3 hours a day, revise, book test |
| 2 | Sit Set D. Begin Set C — 20 hours |
| 3 | Finish Set C, revise, sit test. Begin Set B |
| 4–5 | Set B — 40 hours at 4 hours a day, revise, sit test |
| 6–7 | Set A — 40 hours, revise, sit test |
Requires roughly 3 to 4 hours every day. Feasible during a study leave period or a quiet stretch of articleship, but hard to sustain alongside a full working week.
Steady: about 3 months
| Month | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Set D and Set C — 40 hours combined at 2 hours a day. Both tests done. |
| 2 | Set B — 40 hours, revise, sit test |
| 3 | Set A — 40 hours, revise, sit test |
About 2 hours a day. This is the pace most students can genuinely maintain alongside articleship, and it is the one worth planning for.
Relaxed: about 5 to 6 months
| Period | What you do |
|---|---|
| Months 1–2 | Set D and Set C at 1 hour a day, or weekends only |
| Months 3–4 | Set B |
| Months 5–6 | Set A |
About 1 hour a day, or concentrated weekend sessions. Comfortable, and appropriate if you are starting well ahead of your Final attempt.
The order to do them in
The sequence matters more than most students expect.
Set D first
20 hours, working-knowledge level, largely factual recall. The quickest qualification available to you, and clearing it early builds momentum.
Set C second
Also 20 hours. Two of your four modules are now done, in roughly a month at a steady pace.
Set B third
40 hours and expert-knowledge level. Worth doing before Set A because the strategic cost content feeds directly into Integrated Business Solutions in the Final, where marks actually count.
Set A last
40 hours. The law content supports your Final law preparation, so doing it closer to the Final has some advantage.
Two qualifications inside a month changes how the whole requirement feels. Starting with a forty-hour module means a month of effort before anything is cleared, which is where students lose momentum and let the modules drift.
Planning around articleship
Since you choose your own dates entirely, the constraint is your working calendar rather than ICAI’s.
- Avoid peak periods. Statutory audit season, tax filing deadlines and quarter-end reporting are the wrong weeks to be finding two hours a day.
- Use the quiet stretches. Most articleship years have periods where the workload eases. That is when to push through a forty-hour module.
- Weekend blocks work. Eight hours across a weekend is a fifth of a Set C paper. Four weekends clears a mandatory module.
- Book tests for days you can actually attend. You choose the date, so pick one where taking half a day off is realistic.
Why you need a buffer
All applicable modules must be qualified before you become eligible to appear for the CA Final. That makes the timeline a matter of eligibility, not just convenience.
Things that can consume time unexpectedly:
- A failed attempt. Re-registration, fresh payment, a new slot, and more revision.
- Portal maintenance. ICAI periodically suspends slot booking and testing for upgrades, announced in advance.
- Slot availability. Preferred cities and times fill up.
- Switching electives. If you fail a Set C or Set D paper and choose a different one, that is 20 fresh learning hours before you can even book.
Finish all four modules at least three months before your intended Final attempt. That absorbs a failure and a maintenance window without threatening your eligibility. Leaving them to the final few weeks is how students lose an entire attempt to a formality that carries no marks.
Frequently asked questions
How long does SPOM take in total?
120 learning hours minimum, plus revision. At two hours a day, about two and a half to three months for all four modules.
Can I do it in a month?
Possible at about four hours a day, but demanding alongside articleship. The learning hours cannot be shortened.
How much revision do I need before each test?
Two to four days for a Set C or Set D paper, about a week for Set A or Set B, assuming you read the material during your learning hours.
When should I start?
As soon as you are eligible, which is after clearing CA Intermediate and registering for the Final course.
How soon can I sit the test after finishing my hours?
Often within days, since tests run on most days other than government holidays. It depends on slot availability in your chosen city.
Which module takes longest?
Set A and Set B, at 40 learning hours each and with expert knowledge expected.
How much buffer should I leave before my Final attempt?
At least three months, so a failed attempt or a portal maintenance window does not threaten your eligibility.
Prescribed hours, slot availability and portal schedules are set by ICAI and may change. Confirm the current position on the LMS and SPMT portals when planning.
